The Original/Copy Distinction as Convention

16. December 2013

Lecture, given as part of the workshop “Good Copy//Bad Copy”

Richard Rottenburg is professor for anthropology at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg.

The workshop is built around the provocation that the differentiations between the original and the copy are becoming increasingly obsolete. Instead the most pertinent questions arise from the possibility and processes of differentiation that are being generated within and among ‘copies’ themselves. By taking the case of the pharmaceutical copy and exploring contestations over sanctioned generics versus the ‘counterfeit’, the interchangeable generics versus the ‘merely’ similar this workshop seeks to push conversations on the copy in creative empirically grounded directions. It especially explores processes of differentiation as they are being shaped by new configurations of health, value and security in Europe, Latin America, South Asia and Southern Africa.
